Should you work out when you're sick?

You're not feeling your best, but should you still do some exercise or should you skip it? It varies from person to person, and it depends on how sick you are and what you're dealing with. Mild to moderate physical activity is usually fine if you have a common cold with no fever. Exercise can even help you feel better as it may help open up your nasal passages, which temporarily relieves nasal congestion.

A general rule to decide is if your symptoms are "above the neck" vs "below the neck". If your symptoms are above the neck, such as a runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, or minor sore throat - exercise is generally fine. However, consider reducing the duration and intensity of your workout - you would still need energy for your body to recover. If your symptoms are below the neck, such as chest congestion, a hacking cough, or upset stomach - it is best to take some time off.

If you are experiencing fever, fatigue, or widespread muscle aches, consider taking a break as well.

Be sure to listen to your body and if, during your workout, you feel worse - do not continue with the workout.
