Short vs Long Rest Periods for Muscle Growth

When you plan your workout, do you note down your rest periods between each set? Do you even take breaks in between? When you are training for resistance, weights exhausts your muscles but allowing it to rest in between sets will regain some of your strength back to continue with your workout.

It is important to let your muscles recover but how much time is needed for maximum efficiency between time spent at the gym compared to muscle growth?

Short rest periods are about a 1 minute to 1.5 minutes. Longer rest periods are about 3 minutes long.
